🔴 Insight Timer LIVE: How to Play Background Music [The Right Way!]

If you’ve ever wanted to play background music during your live Insight Timer sessions, but weren’t sure how to achieve the best sound quality, you’re in the right place! Today, I’ll guide you through the process of setting up high-quality background music to achieve a clear and crisp sound for your listeners.

This method ensures that your music is captured internally from your computer and sent directly to Insight Timer, rather than relying on speakers and microphones, which can always result in low-quality audio.

Though it takes a little setup time, once you have it configured, you’ll be able to play background music with excellent sound every time you go live!

What You’ll Need: To get started, you’ll need two free software tools. These are available for both Windows and Mac users:

  1. OBS Studio (Open Broadcaster Software) – This is a powerful tool for streaming and capturing audio and video.
  2. VB-Audio Virtual Cable – This is a virtual audio device that allows us to route audio between applications, like from OBS Studio to Insight Timer.

Both of these tools are free and easy to download and install. Simply follow the instructions on their websites, and I’ll walk you through the setup.

Step 1: Install the Necessary Software

  • Download and install OBS Studio and VB-Audio Virtual Cable (the installation process is straightforward, so I won’t go over the steps here).
  • Once installed, open OBS Studio.

Step 2: Configure OBS Studio for Internal Audio Capture

  • In OBS Studio, locate the Audio Mixer at the bottom. If you don’t see it, you can open it from the Docks menu.
  • Click on the three dots next to the Desktop Audio source and select Filters.
  • Click the plus sign in the Filters window and choose Audio Monitor.
  • In the Audio Monitor settings, select Cable Input (this corresponds to the virtual cable you installed). Make sure to check Volume Link to Source and Link to Source Muting to sync the audio between your computer and Insight Timer.
  • Click Close when done.

Step 3: Set Up Your External Microphone

  • Now, you’ll need to add your microphone input so that both your microphone and background music will be captured.
  • Under Sources, click the plus sign and choose Audio Input Capture. Select your microphone from the list of available devices and click OK.
  • As you speak, you should see the audio levels moving in OBS, which means it’s capturing your voice.

Step 4: Add the Same Filter to Your Microphone

  • Just like we did for the desktop audio, we need to add the Audio Monitor filter to your microphone.
  • Click the three dots next to your microphone in the Audio Mixer and select Filters.
  • Click the plus sign and choose Audio Monitor again.
  • Select Cable Input once more, and check Volume Link to Source and Link to Source Muting.
  • Click Close.

Step 5: Test the Setup in OBS

  • Now that everything is set up in OBS, you can test the sound. Play a piece of music, and you should see the audio meters in OBS moving, indicating that the music is being captured.

Step 6: Configure Insight Timer to Capture the Audio

  • Next, head over to Insight Timer and start a live session.
  • In the Audio Settings, select VB-Audio Virtual Cable as your audio input device. Be sure to choose Output rather than Input because we are capturing the output from OBS, not the microphone directly.
  • When you speak or play music, you should see the audio levels in Insight Timer move.

Step 7: Adjust Volume Levels for the Best Balance

  • Once everything is set up, you may need to adjust the volume levels of both the music and your microphone to find the right balance. Ensure that your audience can clearly hear your voice while enjoying the background music.

The best music for somatic healing sessions is usually calm, simple, and nonintrusive: mostly instrumental ambient music, soft piano or strings, gentle drones, or nature soundscapes. The strongest evidence favors tracks with a slow or moderate tempo, predictable structure, and a feel that the client experiences as safe and familiar, rather than any single “magic” frequency or genre. Music with lyrics, abrupt intensity, or strong personal associations is more likely to pull attention away from body sensing or trigger distress, so it should be used only on purpose and with the client’s consent.

For guided meditations, the best default is to export a WAV master and deliver an MP3 listener copy. WAV is the better choice for editing, archiving, client handoff, and any workflow where you want to preserve full quality and native resolution, while MP3 is usually the better choice for downloads and streaming because it is far smaller and widely supported. Use WAV as the end-user file only when a lossless deliverable is specifically requested or when storage and bandwidth are not a concern.

Choose frequency-based tracks by the job they need to do, not by hype. Use standard A440 or ordinary professionally produced music when a project must stay compatible with other instruments, stock libraries, and collaborators; test 432 Hz or 528 Hz only when the project is explicitly built around relaxation or wellness; and use headphone-dependent formats such as binaural beats when the goal is focus, meditation, or sleep. The best available evidence shows that music can reduce stress, but the evidence for special benefits from 432 Hz and 528 Hz is still small and preliminary, while factors like tempo, timbre, listener preference, loudness, and playback context usually matter more.

The best music for sleep stories is quiet, low-energy background audio that feels soothing but never demands attention. In practice, that usually means instrumental ambient music, soft piano, gentle drones, or nature-sound beds that are slower, smoother, and quieter than normal listening music. The safest default is wordless audio with few rhythmic accents and no sudden changes, because it supports relaxation without competing with the narrator; personal preference still matters, but genre matters less than calmness, simplicity, and predictability.
