What Does Venus Sound Like? Creating the Sound of Venus from Frequency to Music

For my latest music composition, I was inspired by the planet Venus and its unique frequency. Venus is often associated with love, beauty, and harmony, and I wanted to capture this essence in a soundscape. This post will take you through each step of my process, from selecting the frequency to creating a final composition that blends science and mythology. I'll include photos of my process so you can see exactly how it all came together.

What does Venus sound like?

1. Starting with the Venus Frequency: 221.23 Hz

To create this composition, I started with a frequency that’s specific to the planet Venus—221.23 Hz. This frequency is often associated with Venus in music and sound therapy, as it aligns with planetary resonance. By working with this frequency, I could build a soundscape that was both scientifically and emotionally connected to the characteristics we associate with Venus.

 

2. Calculating Harmonics and Subharmonics in the Human Hearing Range

Next, I calculated all the harmonics and subharmonics of the Venus frequency within the human hearing range, which spans from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Harmonics and subharmonics are multiples and fractions of a fundamental frequency that add depth and texture. This step allowed me to layer sounds that are still connected to the original Venus frequency, creating a richer and fuller sound profile.

3. Creating a Frequency Heatmap

With my set of frequencies, I generated a heatmap. This visualization helped me identify and organize the various tones and resonances that would make up the base of my composition. By plotting all the harmonics visually, I could also ensure that each layer of sound would harmonize in a way that represented Venus’ signature frequency accurately.

4. Adding the Venus Image for a Personal Touch

To bring a touch of celestial authenticity, I layered an actual image of Venus from NASA onto the heatmap. This wasn’t just for aesthetics—it added a visual dimension that complemented the sound. Venus’ physical characteristics served as a reminder of the planet’s mystical allure, reinforcing the themes of beauty and harmony I aimed to evoke.

5. Translating the Image into Sound with Sonification Software

With the image and frequencies ready, I moved to the sonification stage. I used Virtual ANS, a software that can turn images into sound, to convert the Venus image into audio. This sonification of the image generated a raw, otherworldly sound—a sonic interpretation of Venus’ appearance.

6. Cleaning and Refining the Audio

The initial audio produced by Virtual ANS was raw and unpolished, so my next step was to clean up this sound file. I stripped it down to the frequencies that resonated best, leaving a cohesive foundation. This clean-up process allowed me to control the tonality and balance of the composition, ensuring it would sound both structured and ethereal.

 

7. Adding the Mythological Essence of Venus

Using the sonified Venus audio as a backbone, I began layering other sounds to represent Venus in a more mythological sense. Known as the planet of love, beauty, and harmony, Venus carries a deep cultural resonance. To capture this, I layered melodies and tones that conveyed warmth and allure, adding an element of mythology to the scientific foundation.

8. Reinforcing with the Original Frequency and Subharmonics

To keep the composition centered around Venus’ frequency, I reinforced it by layering the 221.23 Hz frequency along with three of its subharmonics. This allowed the core sound of Venus to remain present throughout the composition, creating a sense of stability and continuity.

9. Integrating Venus’ Year-to-Day Ratio in the Composition

One unique aspect of Venus is its year-to-day ratio. Venus completes one orbit around the Sun (its year) in 225 Earth days, while a day on Venus lasts 243 Earth days. This ratio of 1.07 was reflected in the oscillation of the frequencies, where each beat of the music represented a single Earth day. By incorporating this rhythm, I aimed to capture the celestial rhythm of Venus within the composition.

 

10. Reflecting the Venus Transit Interval with Composition Length

Venus has a unique astronomical event known as a "Transit of Venus," which occurs in pairs, with an 8-year interval between each pair. To honor this interval, I set the total duration of the composition to 8 years, considering that each beat in my composition represents 1 day. This symbolizes the time between these paired transits, creating a direct connection to Venus' cyclical nature.

This choice ties the structure of the composition to Venus' cosmic behavior, adding an element of astronomical accuracy and enhancing the listener's connection to the planet's natural rhythms. By reflecting this 8-year interval, the piece becomes not just a sound journey, but also a tribute to the celestial dance of Venus across the sky.

 

11. Marking Each Venus Year with a Bell Sound

To create a sense of cycle and renewal, I added a gentle bell sound at the beginning of each Venus year within the composition. This recurring sound serves as an auditory landmark, grounding the listener and marking the passage of time in Venus’ terms.

 

12. Creating Variations for a 1-Year and 16-Year Version

To give listeners different perspectives, I created two versions of the composition: one representing a single Venus year, and another representing a 16-year interval. The longer version provides a more extensive journey through the cycles of Venus, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in a more extended cosmic experience.
