How to Remove Background Noise From Guided Meditation Recordings Using Audacity

In this quick tutorial, we'll explore the process of removing background noise from your guided meditation recordings using Audacity in just 3 simple steps.

Whether you're a yoga or meditation teacher, creating a serene and polished sound for your guided sessions is essential. Unwanted sounds can disrupt the tranquility you aim to create, distracting listeners from the immersive experience.

Before we begin the technical steps, take a moment to listen to your recording, identifying areas where external noise might be present. This initial assessment sets the stage for effective noise removal.

NOTE: if you are new to audio editing and production, you can download Audacity for free. It is available for both Windows and Mac users.

Now, let's dive into the 3 steps to remove background noise from your recording.

How To Remove Background Noise From Meditation Recording Using Audacity

Step 1: Remove Background Noise

Using Audacity's noise removal plugin is a 2 step process: Selecting the noise profile and applying the noise reduction.

A. Select the Noise Profile:

  • Choose a section containing only the background noise.
  • Navigate to Effect > Noise Reduction > Get Noise Profile.

B. Apply Noise Reduction:

  •  This time select the entire recording (Ctrl+A).
  • Go to Effect > Noise Reduction.
  • Set the setting as follows:
Noise Reduction =  between 20-25 dB
Sensitivity = 6
Frequency Smoothing = 3
Noise = Reduce

  • Click OK an take a listen
  • If you are not happy with the result, undo (Ctrl+z) and repeat this process by adjusting the "noise reduction" level only.

Step 2: Enhancing with Noise Gate

A noise gate is a valuable tool used to mitigate background noise and enhance the clarity of recorded audio.
In Essence, the noise gate acts as a virtual gatekeeper, allowing only audio signals above a specified threshold to pass through while suppressing or eliminating softer sounds below that level. This proves particularly useful in eliminating ambient noise, such as hums or room tones, during silent intervals in voiceover recordings.
By setting the appropriate threshold and parameters, a noise gate helps create a cleaner and more professional audio outcome, ensuring that the audience's focus remains on the speaker's voice without distracting background interference.
Now, let's apply Noise Gate to our voice recording.

    Applying Noise Gate:

    • Go to Effect > Noise Gate.
    • Leave parameters at default except for the "Gate Threshold."
    • Set Gate Threshold to around -45 dB
    • Click OK to apply.
    • If the Threshold setting removed too little unwanted noise, undo and try a higher number (-40 or -35).

    Step 3: Experiment With Different Settings

    The settings listed in this tutorial serve as an excellent starting point for noise gate configuration in Audacity. However, it's important to note that every recording is unique and may demand specific adjustments based on factors such as ambient noise levels, microphone sensitivity, and the desired outcome.

    Experimenting with the settings allows you to fine-tune the noise gate settings to match the characteristics of your personal recording environment. Once you find the perfect settings for your recording environment, write them down so that you can reuse them in your next guided meditation recording.

    Paying attention to these details ensures that the noise gate effectively removes unwanted background noise while preserving the natural flow and dynamics of the voiceover. Tailoring the settings to the specific nuances of each recording not only enhances the overall audio quality but also contributes to a more personalized and professional end result.
